Wanted: Muckraker Investigative Reporters
You are a “muckraker reporter” in the 1900’s for a major city newspaper. Your editor has assigned you to travel with Lewis W. Hine up and down the East Coast. You will be investigating children laboring in factories, coal mines and farms, etc. Your itinerary consists of the following locations:
- New York, NY - South Pittston, PA
- North Pownal, VT - Alexandria, VA
- Baltimore, MD - Bells, TX
- Browns Mills, NJ - Gastonia, NC
The article your editor wants you to write must describe the horrible and unsafe conditions under which young children are working. You are to choose one of the twelve Hine pictures you have studied in Social Studies as the source for your article. You must choose a picture different from the other three crew members with whom you are working. Each student must write about a different picture.
Remember that the “Muckrakers’” articles, along with Hine’s pictures, were used to inform Americans about child labor and encouraged Americans to pass laws about factory safety, child labor and education for children. Along with highly descriptive writing, there should be at least a mild persuasive argument in your article.
